I have been to a couple of the Sony awards shows. They are very impressive. I am looking at the rhino.... perfect outline, crisp and clear, when everything else is misty around it. I hate to ask, but do you have to submit raw files? It is wonderful, but almost too perfect..... ;0)

Sort of.

“Your Entry may feature manipulation, but where Entries are manipulated, the extent of which must be described in the image description section when submitting. For the avoidance of doubt, all Entries must originally be from either an analogue or digital photograph which may have then been manipulated. Computer generated content cannot be the origin of the Entry. Should a question arise through the judging process regarding the extent of your Entry’s manipulation you may be requested to submit the original photograph and image file to verify.”

That Rhino image had not struck me that way, but I can see why it might.

Remember Sugimoto's dioramas...... it has that feel. But as they say 'chapeau' if this is legit!

Looking a little closer.... note that the light space/white outline on the back end of the rhino used to bring extra clarity to the rhino's outline, creates a white line through the tree-trunk on the tree behind. I thought only Christian Saints had halos. 😇

I see what you're saying. And agree it's likely been fiddled with. Could it be as simple as a clarity slider dragged too far? Overall I would say it doesn't look overly cooked to me, but I can see why it might to others. Personal preference and all that.

Completely agree. Personal choice and all…

Do you remember all the NIck Brandt photographs that always had lions posed with manes that were straight out of hair and make-up..? He finally admitted, after a lot of noise that perhaps he did do a little ‘post production’. Now his work is all cut-and-paste, merging of images. Not saying this is cut-and-paste, just to be clear. But my faith keeps being challenged. Thank you for your patience with me!

I do know that work but didn't realize he'd copped to excessive post production.

I used to think "purists" were silly. If you like the picture, you like the picture, regardless of how it's made. And I still believe that to some extent.

BUT I have come around to the fact that context really matters, which means I do ultimately receive an image differently if I know it was created by combining multiple frames. Probably a consequence of my professional work involving all manner of that, and so when it comes to what I appreciate most, it's increasingly becoming "straight" photography.

Why thank you for such a ‘lift this ayem.. better said -totally bodacious & timely post ! .. & the kicker or ‘kickoff - was the ‘split lens’ shot of the boat & swimmers as an opener.. as I’m deep into a cinematic ‘camera & lens approach with this ‘look’ via ‘Big Globe’ camera/lens technique

Am a huge fan of the ‘World Wildlife Photo Combination as well.. (no spoilers from me - but among the Winners was an image I must send to a certain eminent Canadian Naturalist, Researcher & Authority.. ! Am certain Dr Andrew Derocher will be Delighted !)

Very decent ‘perspective re Photo Contests thanks - not my bag but most folks here are adults & can figure themselves out and/or their zen of the camera & image. It’s my ‘claim.. that ‘everybody’s a photographer now.. & apparently ‘everyone here is published author’

I’d be very interested to Post about ‘children’s photography & their perspectives or adventures.. ! (My salamandry site is All Ages !) And must add that I’m fascinated by the ‘scratchings of Children ! That’s the ‘term’ I believe.. re the early painting, crayon, marker, chalk etc.. Our brilliant pal - Artist / Designer Richard Cortes has a toddler - & has posted some of his youngest child’s ‘scratchings ! And I have my grandchildren’s early works hoho ! Wild Stuff ! Hell - I has some of my son Dylan’s ‘Early Period ! 🦎🏴‍☠️📷

Some over processing here, specially the first and the chameleon

Also about first one, pure maths: shouldn't sun rays being diverging towards the bottom (i.e. converging to the sun) instead of the way they are? Just in case
